Anthropic moves closer to mega-IPO as bankers line up investor meetings

Anthropic, a prominent artificial intelligence startup known for its Claude models, is progressing toward a significant initial public offering (IPO) later this year. According to sources familiar with the matter, the company is actively scheduling meetings between its executives and potential investors in preparation for its public debut. This development follows Anthropic's confidential IPO prospectus filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission last month, signaling growing momentum in its efforts to enter the public markets, with the possibility of going public as early as October.

The IPO effort is being led by Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, and JPMorgan Chase, three of the largest Wall Street banks by revenue. These financial institutions are engaging with investors to gauge demand ahead of a formal roadshow and the ultimate share sale. Anthropic's valuation has surged notably, reaching $965 billion after closing a $65 billion funding round in May, surpassing its rival OpenAI's $852 billion valuation. This move positions Anthropic to potentially become the first major AI company to list publicly, capitalizing on recent enthusiasm for AI technology following SpaceX’s blockbuster June IPO.

Anthropic's rise is significant not only for its financial implications but also because of its origins and market strategy. Founded in 2021 by former OpenAI executives and researchers, the company quickly found its niche, particularly with its Claude Code assistant that has found strong traction in enterprise markets. The potential public offering would extend the AI boom into public equity markets at a time when AI firms have predominantly remained private despite massive capital inflows and growing industry attention.

This IPO journey represents a broader trend of Wall Street's renewed energy and profitability driven by the AI investment wave. Financial institutions are actively facilitating capital flows into the sector to support AI-related development, which remains a focal point for investors. Meanwhile, Anthropic is also taking steps beyond funding, including advocacy for responsible AI safety policies, underscoring its strategic positioning in both business growth and regulatory landscapes as it moves toward becoming a publicly traded company.
