Trump administration’s head of AI safety agency resigns after 3 months on job

Chris Fall, the Trump administration’s appointee to lead the Center for AI Standards and Innovation (CAISI), unexpectedly resigned after only three months in the role. Fall was selected in April to oversee CAISI, a new agency within the U.S. Department of Commerce tasked with facilitating testing and collaborative research on commercial artificial intelligence systems. Reasons for his sudden departure have not been publicly disclosed by the Commerce Department.

Following Fall’s exit, Arvind Raman, who directs the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), has been named acting head of CAISI. The agency plays a pivotal role as the government steps up its involvement in AI, aiming to ensure safety and innovation amid rapid advancements in the sector. Raman will continue managing NIST alongside this interim role, signaling continuity despite the leadership change.

Fall’s resignation adds to ongoing uncertainties within the Trump administration’s AI policy framework. David Sacks, the former White House AI and crypto czar, left his position earlier in March without a replacement, leaving the administration without a clear point person to steer AI research and regulation. This shift comes amid heightened competition in AI technology, including advancements by Chinese companies challenging U.S. dominance.

The administration recently issued an executive order in June directing AI developers to submit models for government evaluation before release. This initiative has influenced companies like OpenAI and Anthropic to initially limit or modify their AI model rollouts to comply with government directives. Meanwhile, efforts such as the “Gold Eagle” cybersecurity clearinghouse underscore the White House’s increasing role in overseeing AI’s safe deployment, although CAISI is not directly involved in this initiative.
