World Cup Ignites MLS Ticket Sales, but Ratings Stay Mostly Flat

MLS has experienced a significant surge in ticket sales attributed to marketing campaigns launched during the 2026 World Cup. Several teams have reported ticket sales increases surpassing 150%, fueled by coordinated league efforts such as the "Thanks World, We’ll Take It From Here" ad campaign—the largest in MLS history. Local teams like the New York Red Bulls and Philadelphia Union implemented fan engagement initiatives, including free ticket offers and fan viewing events, which helped Philadelphia see a 218% rise in single-game ticket sales amidst a massive World Cup Fan Fest that attracted approximately 575,000 visitors.

The impact of the World Cup extended beyond host cities, with teams like Nashville SC and Charlotte FC also noting substantial sales growth. Nashville recorded a 161% increase in online ticket sales and a boost in merchandise, while Charlotte more than doubled ticket sales for a midweek match compared to earlier dates. Meanwhile, the New England Revolution are expecting over 30,000 fans for an upcoming match, a substantial rise from their seasonal average attendance near 18,000, indicating broad-based demand gains across the league.

Despite the robust uptick in stadium attendance, television viewership for MLS matches on Fox during the World Cup period remained relatively steady. Games in prime Friday slots averaged between 500,000 and 600,000 viewers, numbers comparable to pre-World Cup matches without a marked increase. These figures exclude Apple TV ratings, as streaming data has not been disclosed. Analysts suggest that TV ratings might improve later, once the World Cup concludes and MLS matches feature top players active in the tournament, such as U.S. national team members or marquee stars like Lionel Messi and Robert Lewandowski.

The current contrast between soaring ticket sales and flat TV audiences highlights a challenge for MLS in translating live fan enthusiasm into broadcast growth. The league’s aggressive marketing and local fan activation efforts have successfully energized in-person attendance, establishing a stronger supporter base. However, the slow TV ratings response underscores the need for ongoing strategies to convert this momentum into wider viewership and engagement on traditional and streaming platforms in the period following the World Cup event.
