Blue Jays, Maple Leafs Owner to Put Stake in Sports Empire Up for Sale

Rogers Communications, the majority owner of Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment (MLSE), which includes Toronto’s major sports teams such as the NHL’s Maple Leafs and NBA’s Raptors, plans to sell a minority stake in its consolidated sports and media assets. This announcement follows Rogers’ upcoming $3.1 billion acquisition of the remaining 25% of MLSE equity it did not already own, expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2026. The move positions Rogers as one of the most influential sports ownership groups worldwide.

The intent behind selling this minority stake, anticipated in the first half of 2027, is to enhance shareholder value and lower Rogers’ substantial long-term debt, which is close to $25 billion. CFO Glenn Brandt emphasized the quality and rarity of the combined assets and expressed confidence in securing a strong valuation without discounts. The stake sale will involve non-voting common equity, allowing investors to benefit from future growth while Rogers maintains control.

Amid these corporate transitions, Rogers’ key teams are experiencing varied shifts. The Blue Jays are struggling this season after recently reaching the World Series, with trades expected during the upcoming MLB deadline. The Maple Leafs, still chasing their first Stanley Cup since 1967, have recently overhauled their front office, including hiring John Chayka as GM and bringing Mats Sundin on board as an advisor. Meanwhile, the Raptors’ planned Kawhi Leonard trade is paused due to an NBA investigation into the Clippers.

Financially, Rogers’ sports and media segment showed strong growth in Q2 2026, with revenue surging 53% to $851 million and adjusted earnings jumping from $5.7 million to $49 million, driven largely by the consolidation of MLSE. However, the company posted a net loss of $515 million for the quarter due to a $730 million non-cash charge related to the final purchase of MLSE equity. The strategic minority stake sale marks the next phase in Rogers’ evolving sports empire.
