Kalshi Says Screenshot in Netflix Trailer Was ‘Fabricated’

Netflix's new documentary trailer on prediction markets has ignited controversy due to a brief shot showing a $5,000 bet placed on Spain to win the World Cup using Kalshi’s platform, which appeared to be made in Nevada. The issue arises because Kalshi has been prohibited from offering sports-event contracts in Nevada since March 2026, following a court order by the Nevada Gaming Control Board amid legal battles. The clip, filmed in July 2026 in Las Vegas, seemingly contradicts this ban, prompting questions about the timing and legality of the trade depicted.

However, Netflix clarified that the screenshot shown in the trailer was from a trade placed in May 2025, well before the Nevada court order took effect. The company explained that the trailer was filmed at a private event hosted by Winible, a platform supporting sports content creators, which included key figures from the prediction market space. Netflix maintains that no illegal activity was shown and stands by the accuracy of the documentary's content, emphasizing that trades referenced were made between individuals and the respective platforms at different times and locations.

Kalshi, on the other hand, has strongly disputed the trailer’s portrayal, calling the screenshot “fabricated” and challenging the credibility of the entire documentary. Brandon Beckhardt, Kalshi’s head of marketing, publicly questioned the authenticity of the film, and the company issued a cease-and-desist letter demanding Netflix remove the trailer and retract the misleading material. Kalshi argued that the false depiction endangers its legal position in ongoing litigation with Nevada regulators and asked Netflix to issue a formal statement disavowing the claims.

This dispute occurs amid escalating regulatory scrutiny. Last month, the Nevada Gaming Control Board sought contempt proceedings against Kalshi over allegations that users could still access prohibited sports markets in the state. To resolve this, Kalshi agreed to implement a robust multi-source geofencing solution by August 12, 2026, to block Nevada users from sports-event contracts. Failure to comply would result in a daily $120,000 penalty, highlighting the high stakes involved as Kalshi navigates regulatory challenges while trying to maintain its reputation and business operations.
