3 Top Russian Gymnasts Denied Visas To Attend World Championships

Russia’s leading female gymnasts Angelina Melnikova, Viktoria Listunova, and Anna Kalmykova have been denied visas to enter the Netherlands ahead of the 2026 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Rotterdam. The Dutch Embassy cited concerns from Schengen Area member states that the athletes pose a threat to international relations, likely tied to Melnikova and Listunova’s public support for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Meanwhile, four other Russian athletes have been granted visas, with five more still awaiting decisions, leading to allegations from the Russian Gymnastics Federation of targeted exclusion.

Melnikova, the reigning World and European all-around champion and a key figure in Russia’s Olympic gold victory in 2021, along with Listunova, also an Olympic gold medalist, were seen as top contenders for multiple medals at the championships. Kalmykova, the national all-around champion and European silver medalist, completes the trio. The visa denials effectively bar these top athletes from competing in a critical Olympic qualification event, disrupting Russia’s chances of securing quotas for the upcoming Games.

The Russian Gymnastics Federation has condemned the visa denials as discriminatory and plans to appeal the decision before the International Olympic Committee and World Gymnastics. Despite repeated requests, World Gymnastics and Dutch authorities have provided no comment, and the federation has noted a lack of support from the sport’s governing body. As the championships approach and visa windows close, Russia’s priority has shifted toward safeguarding fair Olympic qualification conditions.

This incident echoes similar political tensions affecting international sports events, such as Indonesia’s 2025 refusal to issue visas to the Israeli gymnastics delegation for the World Championships. That decision went uncontested by World Gymnastics, which argued visa matters fall outside its jurisdiction. With these precedents, Russia’s top gymnasts now face a challenging path to participation in Rotterdam, highlighting ongoing intersections between geopolitics and global sports competitions.
