As search traffic dries up, Reddit announces it’s shifting to a logged-in experience

Reddit is responding to a significant decline in search traffic driven by the rise of AI-powered search engines by moving towards a primarily logged-in user experience. This strategic shift, announced during Reddit’s third-quarter earnings call on October 29, 2026, aims to safeguard Reddit’s content from unauthorized AI scraping and enhance revenue opportunities through licensing deals with AI model providers. Although global daily active users remained steady at 130.3 million, Reddit saw a decline in U.S. daily users, dropping from 53.2 million in Q2 to 50.7 million in Q3. The company warned that if the current trend persists, its daily active users could fall by low double-digit percentages in the near future.

The decline in search referrals is part of a broader industry shift as traditional web traffic decreases due to AI-driven search previews that reduce the need for clicks to external sites. Reddit experienced a loss of over 1 million search traffic referrals per week in October alone. Despite these challenges in user growth, Reddit’s financial performance improved with revenues reaching $895 million in Q3, a 53% increase year-over-year, and net income rising 74% to $283 million. The company also boosted its average revenue per user, especially in the U.S., where it jumped 53% to $13.82, underlining Reddit’s success in monetizing its audience more effectively, even as user numbers contract.

Transitioning to a logged-in experience offers multiple benefits for Reddit’s business model. Logged-in users provide richer behavioral data, enabling more precise ad targeting, which tends to generate higher advertising revenue. This change aligns with Reddit’s recent unveiling of its “For You” feed, an algorithmic recommendation system designed to tailor content to individual user interests and engagement patterns. Reddit plans to gradually test the logged-in experience starting in select non-U.S. markets in Q4, without eliminating the anonymous browsing option, which will be improved with an enhanced “incognito mode.” CEO Steve Huffman emphasized that though this marks a departure from Reddit's open-web roots, the change is necessary for the platform’s future.

This shift signals a larger transformation across the web as AI discovery reshapes how users access information, challenging open internet principles. While Reddit’s move may protect its community and revenue streams from AI-related disruptions, it also restricts open access to content traditionally available without login. Reddit admits many details remain to be worked out regarding the boundary between logged-in and logged-out experiences. However, the company remains confident this evolution is critical to sustaining its platform and business, balancing user privacy, anonymity, and personalization amidst the rapidly changing digital landscape.
